KYRUS' MOVIE REVIEW: "The Hangover Part II" (GRADE: B-)

The Hangover Part II - Reviewed by kYrus
(Hamilton AMC 24 - May 26, 2011)

WHAT WORKED
+They pretty much used the EXACT same formula as the first movie. You'd think that'd be stupid and dumb, but it's really not. It's still funny and full of surprises.

+Zach Galifinakis is as funny as ever. He is HILARIOUS in this movie and provides some of the best dialogue.

+Lots of familiar faces in this movie from the first one, mixed in with some new faces and situations. It was very fun to watch.
WHAT DIDN'T WORK
+Ken Jeung has become a little too annoying. He wasn't as funny because he is just too much.

+Justin Bartha is actually a really funny actor, but they don't utilize him at all. (They didn't in the first one either.)

SHOULD YOU GO SEE IT?
Absolutely. It may easily be the funniest movie of the year.

FINAL GRADE
I will give this film a B-. It's a solid comedy film that works directly off the first film. Go see it.

KYRUS' MOVIE REVIEW: "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (GRADE: C+)

Pirates of the Carribeean: On Stranger Tides - Reviewed by kYrus
(Hamilton AMC 24 - May 24, 2011)

WHAT WORKED
+They didn't try to do too much. They did not try to top the last two Pirate movies with over the top special effects or action sequences.

+It was fun to see Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow again. As soon as he appears on the screen, you can't help but smile... because it's JACK FRIGGIN' SPARROW!

+The killer mermaid scene was actually scary and cool to watch.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK
+Though the movie didn't rely on special effects, the effects that they DID rely on were cheesy and obvious. In times like this when even bad movies have decent special effects, this movie failed to adhere to the current standards.

+Blackbeard was not a scary villain by any means. In the previous films you had the intense Barbosa and the VERY scary Davy Jones... but this movie had an "eh" villain that wasn't scary by any means.

+The two romantic leads (The Mermaid and the Christian guy) were just thrown in there for no reason. They definitely took away from the movie and their arc was never completed.

SHOULD YOU GO SEE IT?
Sure. If you've seen the previous three, you mind as well see this one. But don't expect anything memorable.

FINAL GRADE
I will give this film a C+ It kinda loses the genuine feel the first film had, and it doesn't stand out and have any memorable moments like the previous films. But sure, go check it out.

KYRUS' MOVIE REVIEW: "Bridesmaids" (GRADE: B)

Bridesmaids - Reviewed by kYrus
(Hamilton AMC 24 - May 14, 2011)

WHAT WORKED
+Kristin Wiig is easily one of the funniest female comedians out there right now. You can tell that she had written this movie because she played to ALL of her strengths and proved even more.

+Melissa McCarthy as "Megan" has some of the most memorable and hilarious lines all throughout the film. Whenever she is on the screen, she simply steals the show.

+This movie is great for both males and females. Though it's not necessarily "The Hangover For Females", it is hilarious movie that easily stands on it's own.
WHAT DIDN'T WORK
+The first half and second half of the movie are pretty much too separate movies. The tone of both halves were different, with the second half being the weakest.

+About 3/4 of the way through the movie, it just started to drag. They really tried to drive the dramatic aspect of the film, but it just didn't work. You were either waiting for laughs, or wanting the movie to just climax and end. (That's what she said.)

SHOULD YOU GO SEE IT?
Definitely. This may will definitely rate as one of the funniest films of the entire year.

FINAL GRADE
I will give this film a B. This is a really funny, interesting movie for both men and women. Go see it and support the hilarious Kristin Wiig!

KYRUS' MOVIE REVIEW: "Rio" (GRADE: C)

RIO - Reviewed by kYrus
(Hamilton AMC 24 - May 11, 2011)

WHAT WORKED
+The animation was simply superb. The visual imagery that created Rio added so much to this film and was very fun to look at.

+Tracy Morgan was the best, and most memorable when it came to the voice talent.

+The movie seemed to be very entertaining to the children my friends bought to the theater with them.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK
+Too many annoying characters. Usually one annoying character is enough for a movie, but with FIVE annoying comic relief characters, it gradually became less and less funny.

+Jessie Eisenberg, though funny in his earlier movies, has become a little too much. Unlike Hugh Grant's bumbling talk, Jesse's has become slightly too much and over-used.

SHOULD YOU GO SEE IT?
Sure, if you have children or a young one to take. But on your own? Probably not. It's just not nearly as funny or interesting as the commercials made it out to be.

FINAL GRADE
I will give this film a C. There is nothing that makes this film stand out from the rest of the kid's movies that are being offered.

KYRUS' MOVIE REVIEW: "Thor" (GRADE: B+)

THOR - Reviewed by kYrus
(Market Fair - May 7, 2011)

WHAT WORKED
+The way that Kenneth Branagh made both the real world and a completely made up fantasy world exist in the same movie, was simply spectacular. Very fun to watch and the transitions were as smooth as can be.

+This film is the lead up to Captain America and next year's Avenger's movie... this is like a wonderful tease as to what is to come.

+Funny! There were a lot of funny moments that this film very enjoyable.

+In addition to the special post-credit scene, there is a special cameo by a future Avenger during the middle of the film... most people may overlook it, but the comic book fans out there know who it is... :-)

+The main villain, Loki, was a great villain, and played masterfully. I have more on this, but I don't want to ruin it for people who haven't seen it yet.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK
+The big fire shooting robot thing just didn't work for me. Kind of weird.

+The four sidekicks for Thor seemed a little under-developed and not necessary at times.

+The theatrical ending may leave you a little confused. But I'm sure all will be answered in time.

SHOULD YOU GO SEE IT?
This movie is tied in to the Marvel Universe. So, YES. There are references to the Iron Man movies, along with a reference to Hulk... and of course, this movie sets up the upcoming Captain America movie and Avenger's movie...

FINAL GRADE
I will give this film a solid B+. It was a lot of fun to watch and definitely not as corny as I thought it would be when I initially saw the trailer for this film.

KYRUS' MOVIE REVIEW: "Fast Five" (GRADE: B)

Fast Five - Reviewed by kYrus
(Hamilton AMC 24 - April 19, 2011)

WHAT WORKED
+Out of all the Fast & Furious movies, this was , BY FAR, the best in the series.

+The action sequences in this film were fun, intense, and filmed well. They have you on the edge of your seat throughout each action scene.

+Bringing in the best of the best characters from each of the previous Fast and Furious films was a nice, fun touch.

+The Rock was the ultimate bad-ass in this film. He definitely added a much needed spark at times.

+There is a suprise scene halfway through the credits. Out of respect of the people who haven't seen this movies yet, I will not ruin it for you, but just know that it is AWESOME.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK
+Behind David Arquette, Vin Diesel may possibly be the worst actor of all time. Some of his "emotional moments" are hysterical.

+Dumb plot and terrible character motivations.

+Too much exposition. Though the action sequences were fun, they were few and FAR between. There was too much talking, so much so that the movie was surprisingly even boring and slow at times.

SHOULD YOU GO SEE IT?
This summer movie season is filled with guy-driven, testosterone-loving action movies. This was a GREAT way to kick off a summer season that includes Transformers 3, Thor, Green Lantern, and tons of others.

FINAL GRADE
I'll give this film a B. It was a fun action movie that is much better than the previous actions movies we've been offered this year so far. I had a great time watching it.
